Combining Peas
Pea plantings have fallen steadily over the last five years, doubtless helping to stimulate the recent improvement in prices. For those growers remaining with the crop, the choice of varieties continues to improve. Marketing flexibility make Large Blue types the most popular choice for growers.
- Prophet – Highest yielding Large Blue variety in the recommended list, Prophet boasts ease of harvest ability and excellent Downy Mildew resistance. Grain quality from 2007 harvest has been very acceptable to micronisers and bird seed outlets.
- Standal – New French-bred large blue, with good harvestability and excellent grain quality. Appears to retain colour for longer at harvest.
- Bluestar _ Recommended in 2009, this variety offers similar yields to Prophet, with grain quality gaining significant interest from end users.

Beans
With yields and quality of Spring Beans much improved from 2007 harvest, returns have been boosted further by a very bullish market.
To help ensure suitable quality for the human consumption market, we recommend the following varieties:
- Wizard Winter Beans – Accepted by the North African buyers, used specifically for decorticating trade.
- Husky Winter Beans – Slightly smaller than Wizard, but have the potential to do the same job as Wizard. Good Agronomically, and tend to pod further up from the ground than Wizard.
- Fuego Spring Beans – High quality and output make this a favoured benchmark variety.
- Fury Spring Beans – Newly listed, with 5% higher yield than Fuego. High yielding variety, with sound agronomics and meeting the quality standards for the expanding human consumption market. Slightly lower TSW.
- Pyramid Spring Beans – Another new recommendation, with 4% yield advantage over Fuego, and a similar TSW. Weaker on Downey Mildew Resistance.
