Farm Plastic Recycling Clifton Recycling Logo

The Company

Clifton Recycling is a well-established plastic recycling business based at Sycamore Farm on Romney Marsh in Kent. It is part of the farming business of AA Clifton Farms Ltd.

The Legislation

As of 15th May 2007, due to the EU Waste Directive, it will be illegal for farmers and growers to dispose of any farm plastic waste other than through an Environment Agency licensed scheme and disposal site.

The Service

Clifton Recycling offers, as part of their overall business, a specialist cost-effective disposal service for all fertiliser/seed bags, triple-rinsed agrochemical containers and cardboard waste to all farmers and growers, particularly in the South East of England.

Arrangements can also be made for the disposal of all other packaging waste. Some may be suitable for recycling, whereas others need alternative forms of disposal.

T Denne and Sons Ltd (Plastic Recycling Division) will be the first point of contact. They will operate all aspects of training, registration, booking-in of material, inspection and handling of payment for the service.

Acceptable Materials: ‘Non Hazardous Waste’

  1. Agrochemical containers, which must be triple-rinsed to be classified as ‘non hazardous waste’
  2. Seed bags, fertiliser bags and cardboard agrochemical boxes from arable farms
  3. Waste plastic from specialist horticultural and market gardening operations
  4. Black plastic waste from stock farms
  5. Small quantities of baler twine and animal feed bags with prior agreement

Non-acceptable Materials: ‘Hazardous Waste’

The following materials will not be accepted:
Tyres, batteries, waste oil, scrap metal and non triple-rinsed chemical containers etc.

We can advise details of specialist ‘Hazardous Waste’ management companies.

Failure to comply with the EU Directive could lead to prosecution by the Environment Agency and will lead to non-compliance with Farm Assurance and Cross Compliance Schemes.

Procedures

  1. All farmers/growers must initially register with T Denne and Sons Ltd (Plastic Recycling Division) for any services required
  2. Registration binds farmers/growers to T Denne and Sons Ltd (Plastic Recycling Division) and Clifton Recycling procedural terms and conditions
  3. Training is an integral and vital element of the scheme
  4. All collections and deliveries will have to be pre-booked and pre-paid
  5. All farmers/growers will be able to deliver their own ‘non hazardous’ waste to Sycamore Farm or a collection service will be available ex-farm at an extra cost
  6. The farmer/grower may not transport waste for another farmer/grower, unless he/she holds an ‘Agricultural Waste Carrier Permit’
  7. Presentation of waste
    1. Seed and fertiliser bags: Bundles of ten
    2. Cardboard: Flat packed into a seed/fertiliser bag
    3. Agrochemical containers: Packed into supplied special high-strength bags. (Each bag should contain approximately the number of agrochemical cans required for spraying 30 arable ha annually)

The Future

Recycling of agricultural/horticultural waste plastic is still in its infancy, with final processors still unaware of the range, quality and volume of material potentially available.

After 15th May 2007 opportunities for the recycling of a wider range of waste may become apparent (e.g. silage wrap) and the need for landfill should be reduced. As these opportunities arise, we will keep you informed about the new services we will be able to offer.

What Now?

To join the scheme, please print out the registration form (PDF 26K) and post it to us completed with a cheque for £35.25 made payable to T Denne and Sons Ltd. Once payment has been received, we will arrange a training session for you to attend locally.
